Exclusive Interview With Kenyan Beauty Tessa Mugenya

My name is Tessa Mugenya and I am 19 years old. I'm from Nairobi, Kenya. I go to Carthage College in Kenosha and although I’m currently undecided, I am thinking of studying Geospatial Science, with a focus on Geoscience.    I think that African teens have a very unique style that is fresh and ever evolving. With the influence of social media and the world being a global village, I am certain that African teens are on the verge of dominating the fashion world. From models to designers to makeup artists to hairstylists and photographers, what can’t we do? The world needs to realize that African teens have something that nobody else can bring to the table, and thus should be encouraged and granted equal opportunities in the fashion world.

WHY DO I HAVE TO LOOK BEAUTIFUL WITHOUT MAKEUP

Why Do I Have To Look Beautiful Without Makeup? What if I don't? What if I just look, well...ordniary?    “Natural beauty” has become packaged in a very manipulative way, especially to young women.  When I ask, “Why should I go natural?” the typical response I receive is one of condescension. It’s not really the “health” of your skin that matters yet somehow it’s “better” for you.  Apparently “going natural” has become centered on proving to men that a woman can look beautiful without the assistance of eyeshadow, mascara, foundation, etc.  Having a “bare face” isn’t about feeling confident in one’s own skin; it’s about gaining the approval of sexist men that truly believe they are entitled to a woman. To me, it continues to make looking pretty or attractive the goal.

Get to Know Sudanese Model Nyakim Gatwech, "The Queen of Dark"

Gatwech was born in South Sudan at a time when the African country was in the throes of a brutal civil war. Her nation's instability rocked her childhood and, as a result, she lived in refugee camps in both Ethiopia and Kenya before ultimately immigrating to the United States with her mother and siblings at the age of 14. Nyakim Gatwech said when she was in middle school, she cried herself to sleep thinking she wasn't beautiful enough. Now, the 24 year old South Sudanese model has become an icon of beauty and an inspiration to young women everywhere.      Her secret? Self-love. It takes time to love who you are. Be confident in whatever the situation is,” Nyakim said in an interview with Teen Vogue, “If you love yourself other people will see. It will shine through you and then they have the choice to accept you or walk away.” Nyakim went viral after posting a story of her interaction with an Uber driver on Instagram. When the Uber driver asked her if she would bleach h

Meet Beauty Queen "Melissa Obioha"

My name is Melissa Obioha , however my close friends &family call me mimi or Mel. I am 18years old and I live in Canada mostly. What I love the most about myself is the ability to be confident and always keep my head on my shoulders at all times! Confidence is something I never had while growing up , I was very insecure and I bet a lot of people don’t even know that. I had to convince myself as I was growing up that I was my own version of “almost perfect”.    I think what helped me more was my fashion , I've always loved dressing up and shopping. I can spend like 7 hours in the mall just looking at myself in the mirror whilst trying on clothes that I may or may not even buy! Just the thought that I loved what I saw in the mirror made me extremely happy. I think confidence is one thing I would love all young girls to have , I’m all for girl power (evryone knows this , Lmao) One of my many dreams is to make every girl feel confident and sexy without thinking ab

"ELLAHH STYLE" Fashion YouTuber & Style Blogger Emmanuela Okon

Emmanuela Okon. A full-time Student, Fashion YouTuber & Style Blogger based in Canada, in the city of Mississauga to be precise. She is currently studying Communication Culture & Information Technology as well as Political Science at the University of Toronto Mississauga According to her "Fashion is something that has stuck with me ever since I was a little girl. My love for fashion at that time may have come from the looks I had seen some of my fav celebrities have on back then. However, at this point, fashion is more than just what I thought it was while I was a little girl. Fashion has become a craft to me. I believe there’s so much out there in terms of what either fashion bloggers, YouTubers or even designers are doing out there" And, so I decided to make fashion a form of performance to myself. I remember back when I was in Nigeria, I was not so crazy about watching fashion related videos on YouTube. This was bec

How to Stylishly Wear Denim on Denim

Denim is, after all, the people's fabric—it's just too popular to limit to one single item. "The beauty of denim is that it can transcend all these different styles. The key to pulling off the look is having the right balance. Break up your look with staples like a white tee or blue button down. Opt for a lighter wash top with a faded finish or denim with embellishments, like beading or sequins The easiest way to do it? Pair new with old.  I love mixing old and new. I think it's really fresh and timeless at the same time. Like a vintage trucker jacket, and then wearing it with a pair of black jeans.  —Matt Baldwin The best way to pair to denim pieces together, whether it's a denim shirt and jeans, or a denim jacket and jeans, or even a denim jacket on a denim shirt, is that the level of wear should be different on the items. One thing I wear a lot is a raw denim jacket and a pair of jeans, but my jeans are super worn in. So my denim jacket can b

I'm Da’ud Balqeez, a Muslim, medical student and a modest style blogger. “Fashion, to me, represents life. When I wear something that makes me feel more…creative, more interesting, stronger, complicated — that’s when I feel the most alive, the most engaged with the world. Changing my wardrobe is the quickest route to feeling like everything is new again, that anything is possible. So the purpose of fashion is to make you feel alive and present. BEAUTY IS POWER

Beauty/Power is one concept, not two,’ they said. ‘We have come to restore people to full power and beauty, for until they step into their power and honor their individual beauty, the world will be unable to come into balance.  “Power is beauty Beauty is power.”  “Power/Beauty is the living out of one’s essence. It is not power ‘over’ or power ‘in order to,’ but being 100% oneself, and living in the truth of who you are. “Since beauty is the outward manifestation of one’s essence, every being is beautiful when expressing their essence. “Beauty/Power in life is action,” they said; ‘truly, it is life manifesting itself Featuring: @king.toyo
